the bleached out look...

how do movies like seven get that kinda bleached out, bleak look...?
i know that seven skipped the bleaching stage in the film processing (or something like that) but is it possible to do something like that to dv that isn't processed?

right i start by saying that i'm using Final Cut Pro 2.0 - but the filters are the same in all editing packages esp. Premier...

ONE
apply a 'channel' filter (one that allows you to adjust 'input', 'input tolerance', 'gamma' 'output' and 'output tolerance')

first play about with the gamma as this is the most important setting, set it to 0.22 for example - this should lighten your image
do the same for input and input tolerance take them down to low numbers ie. 0.2 and 10 respectivly
however put the output up to > 50 and the output tolerance to < 50

TWO
apply a desaturate filter to it

play about with this - it does exactly what it says - takes all colour out of the image

the two working together (and altered to your taste) will get a good bleached out effect

It's basically just a color thing. Movies like Seven and The Sixth Sense and Unbrekable all had the color lowered to make it look all bleak.
